Heceta Beach health advisory issued September 22

The Oregon Health Authority issued a public health advisory today for higher than normal levels of bacteria in ocean waters at Heceta Beach in Lane County.

People should avoid direct contact with the water in this area until the advisory is lifted. Higher than normal levels of fecal bacteria can cause diarrhea, stomach cramps, skin rashes, upper respiratory infections and other illnesses. This applies especially to children and the elderly, who may be more vulnerable to illness from waterborne bacteria.

Increased pathogen and fecal bacteria levels in ocean waters can come from both shore and inland sources such as stormwater runoff, sewer overflows, failing septic systems, and animal waste from livestock, pets and wildlife.

While this advisory is in effect at Heceta Beach, visitors should avoid wading in nearby creeks, pools of water on the beach, or in discolored water, and stay clear of water runoff flowing into the ocean. Even if there is no advisory in effect, officials recommend avoiding swimming in the ocean within 48 hours after a rainstorm.

Although state officials advise against water contact, they continue to encourage other recreational activities (flying kites, picnicking, playing on the beach, walking, etc.) on this beach because they pose no health risk even during an advisory.

The status of water contact advisories at beaches is subject to change. For the most recent information on advisories, visit the Oregon Beach Monitoring Program website or call 971-673-0482, or 877-290-6767 (toll free).

We are ready to welcome you back.

If the novel Coronavirus has taught us anything, it’s that we cannot take our safety for granted anymore.  Masks and in some cases, gloves have become a way of life. By all expert accounts, this could become the new normal.

Perhaps you’ve been “quaranteaming” with family and/or friends, or maybe you’ve been going it alone. Either way, when restrictions ease and travel resumes, you’ll no doubt be ready for a getaway to your favorite place.

Here’s the question to consider. Is your favorite place ready for you?

Here at Whales Watch Vacation Rentals, we can answer that important with a resounding YES. We know exactly who has been in each property, what tasks they’ve performed and whether they’ve been wearing protective face coverings and following all updated guidelines (hint: they have).

In the time of the novel Coronavirus, when few things make sense anymore, you can feel confident that your vacation rental accommodations are as safe as your own home for you and your quaranteam.

Here are a few reasons why:

Cleaning during COVID-19

During our closure, we've taken this time to educate ourselves and our cleaners on cleaning during this pandemic.

We know there is heightened uncertainty around travel with the coronavirus (COVID-19), so we wanted to proactively share the steps we’ve taken to ensure your health and safety. While we always take the proper precautions and exercise rigorous cleaning protocols between each guest stay, we are sanitizing and disinfecting every property following guidelines laid out by the World Health Organization, CDC, and EPA.

We encourage you to review our comprehensive housekeeping procedures, an example of which can be found [cleaning list]. We know this is an unconventional time, but we hope our commitment to providing the most well-maintained and clean properties gives you more confidence.

Stay safe. Stay healthy. We’ll see you SOON

COVID-19 has changed all of our lives in ways we couldn’t even imagine as little as 2 months ago.
There’s so much fear and uncertainty. We’re there with you.

The vacation rental industry has been impacted particularly hard by the virus. As soon as borders started
closing and stay-at-home orders were issued, our guests were forced to cancel their reservations.

While of course, this has hit us hard in many ways, the most important message we want to convey is
that we’re still here and we’re not going anywhere. Our office doors may be closed, but our phone and
internet lines are open. Our business is open.

Truth be told, we miss you. Remember, as vacation rental managers and owners, we CHOSE the
hospitality industry! We miss recommending our favorites restaurants and coffee shops. We miss
hearing your vacation stories and telling you a few of our own. We miss your kids and dogs.

But right now, we’re all safer where we are. At home with our loved ones. Trying new recipes.
Recording TikTok videos. Staying connected on Facebook and FaceTime. Homeschooling and
telecommuting. Binge-watching Netflix. Washing our hands. Maybe (probably) going a little stir-crazy.

We know you’ll join us in giving thanks for all our selfless first-responders, from the doctors and nurses
in the ER to the grocery delivery drivers who keep us stocked. We owe each and every one a debt
of gratitude for their part in keeping the rest of us healthy.

Again, please know that we are hunkered down and riding it out. Most importantly, we’re HERE.
We’re not giving up on our industry and more importantly, we’re not giving up on our guests, our owners,
and our friends. We will get through this. We’re made of sturdy stuff here on the Oregon Coast and when
it’s safe to travel again, we’ll be here to greet you.

In the meantime, please know this: This, too, shall pass. The borders will open back up. The day
will come when you can travel again. We will all see each other again.

That’s the day that keeps us going.

Stay safe. Stay healthy. We’ll see you SOON.

Celebrating Vacation Rental Week, March 9-13, 2020!

Whales Watch Vacation Rentals is thrilled to participate in the first annual Vacation Rental Week—the vacation and holiday rental industry’s first of its kind! We’d like to use this opportunity to highlight the value and key benefits of professionally-managed vacation rentals for both guests and property owners alike, and to encourage you to book a stay or choose a professional manager to rent your vacation property.

As a guest, vacation rentals are a great alternative to hotels in every aspect, offering you much more for your money, with additional space, privacy, convenience, and amenities included. Along with this added value, your options are constantly increasing as the industry itself experiences rapid growth each year, meaning there are more available properties, more variety, and more destinations to choose from.

Vacation rentals also present you with a unique opportunity to create a more personalized, memorable vacation experience when compared with traditional hotels. You’ll have the practical comfort of an actual residence, the ability to explore the neighborhood, and the opportunity to discover aspects of your destination you might not encounter when staying at a hotel. If you’re vacationing with a group of family or friends, vacation rentals are an excellent option, typically offering multiple bedrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, and easy access to local entertainment.

For property owners, renting your second property through a professional manager can be an easy and reliable revenue source, transforming it into an asset that offers a significant return on your investment. You’ll also be able to use the property when you choose, spending your own vacations there with family or friends, while renting it to guests the rest of the year.

A professional vacation rental manager will handle all the logistics, securing responsible guests, and maximizing your return through an expert understanding of the industry and in-depth knowledge of the local community. They’ll also advertise the property, handle inquiries, collect deposits and balances, generate agreements, and follow-up post-rental, so you can sit back and simply enjoy the experience.

Finding a vacation rental to book or a professional manager to represent your property is fast and easy. Our friends at the Vacation Rental Management Association (VRMA) [ www.vrma.org] provide a free search tool  https://www.vrma.org/page/find-a-vrm to locate property managers and their available properties worldwide. Find a vacation rental or professional manager for your property and get started in this exciting industry today!

If you would like to join and get involved in Vacation Rental Week, visit the Vacation Rental Week homepage  https://bit.ly/2TTokav to download the toolkit, and help spread the word about professionally managed vacation rentals.

Anchor's A-Way Now, as a vacation rental 11- 16-2018

This house is my baby and pet project, I love everything about it.  The history is fantastic, and we've turned it back into what it once was, or maybe better, without losing any of it's fun qualities.  We've had a ton of people work on this house from my best friend, who helped me do some serious decorating, when she felt Orange wasn't a color you worked with - she recovered from that and had a blast.  To a really great contractor (Eric Iversen), who worked within our parameters and budget.  My favorite plumber (Dave Harrison) who did a bunch of preliminary work and then had to come back out and do more, after we had an unexpected freeze.  To my other best friend Erik Journey, who worked on the clock and for free of charge depending on the situation. My yard guy Randy, who has plodded along methodically when I gave him a really limited budget.
Side Deck

Sunny front deck.

The view from the corner of Joshua & 5th Avenue - it's super close to the beach.

After we removed some tree's cleared the drainfield and added the new retro fence.

Queen Bed in the loft.

Fun orange light, and vintage Oregon map.

Dining Area

The rattan swivel rockers - with new retro cushions, and hey there's that great mid-century foot stool, Still around after all these years.  There is also the fun mid-century floor lamp, and end table that have survived all this time.

I told you that cadet heater was still there and working perfectly - I serviced it this year.  I just love our new upholstered twin built in beds.  Our upholstery guy was sitting on some great orange retro fabric, and the new high density foam makes them comfortable.

Mrs. Grey lives next door but she love's the sunny deck.

The wild Rhododendron in bloom.

The Great Picnic Table we just picked up that seats 4.   Come stay with us!

Anchor's A-Way a 1965 600 square foot A-Frame

Everyone know's I love A-Frames, and in the summer of 2013 I took on 2 of them as vacation rentals. Anchor's A-Way was in need of some organization, a good clean up, and some yard work.   Here's what we started with. I'll post what we ended up with in another article.
The built in bunch beds, which we're just in need of new mattresses.

Don't see the old cadet wall heaters very often - but it still works like a champ

Cool mid-century floor lamp and orange footstool.

I love the wood stove, but we had to lose it, as it was cracked, and not to code.   However we have saved the metal ring, and the white rock that filled it, incase we ever get to put one back in.

Kitchen just needed some cleaning and organization - very small but functional

40 years worth of the owners treasures and supplies

Bathroom, got a new floor and paint.

Bedrooom, loft got a new Queen bed, and some artwork, orginal yellow shag carpet is in gorgeous shape.

love the bunk beds, with the storage underneath, and the orange paint is just so fantastic.  Especially with the herringbone yellow/gold linoleum.

more stuff - the vintage red card table is folded up and ready to use for jigsaw puzzles on stormy days.

The Magic Chef Apartment size stove, got new drip pans and was ready to go back to cooking.

Well at least we were able to save the floor and the braided rug.  See next article for how Anchor's A-Way turned out.

Architectural Oddities

There are a few other gems I love. Some are just downright odd, and then there are those that are just rare here in Florence.

My favorite oddity is Sea Star Spa, which is one of my vacation rentals. It's actually just a square box, but you wouldn't guess that looking at it's roof:
Well this isn't really an oddity it's a dome, but it's an oddity here in Florence!
Eccentricity Antiques and I have decided that this is a Northwest Coastal Sixties Modern. There just is no other way you can describe them.

Whales Watch also a Northwest Coastal Sixties Modern.  Who in the heck puts a point at the front of their house with a flat roof pitched towards the beach? Of course living here, I know it tends to deflect the wind up and over us! I do know mine was built in 1969.
I'll let everyone make their own decisions on this one!
This is actually a tri-plex, but it's very beachy and really unique.

This is the newest house I took a picture of built in the late 90's.  But it is one house, just 3 Cape Cod Cottages put together?
An finally, we have a few things going on here.  Pilings, a turret, and several different roof angles and pitches. However I think it's very beachy and it's one of my favorties. It was built sometime in the seventies.

Couple more A-Frames

My plan is to put together a private google map that I can hand out to guests or friends who are as nutty about A-Frames as me.  But here are 2 more I hunted down today. Some of these are located on semi-private streets that are best walked past.

Erik from Eccentricity Antique Journey and I were debating about the one above.  It's sides aren't flat, is it an  A-Frame? Our conclusion, while modified with a curvy roof it does still fulfill the A-Frame requirement.
This one is wow - part of it, that makes it so wow is the lime green color.  But catch the fact that it has an A-dormer (there's a matching one on the other side).  And the fact that it has sort of an A front and back porch cover.  Not my color, but it is very cool.
Not a traditional A-Frame either, but an A-Frame nevertheless.

1965 Mid-Century Time Capsule "Starfish Sands"

I manage some great 1960's beach houses, all of which I love as they're what says beach to me.  But I have one that's just outstanding as a time capsule.  It's mostly original, and I love it for that.  Is it the house for everyone? No, but that's why variety is the spice of life.  I've been spending a lot of time reading stuff over at Retro Renovation, and this house seems to fall into a term Pam coined "mid-century modest"

The owners bought it in 2007 from the original owners son, so it's basically only on it's second owners and they're really into keeping it what it is.

Lets start with the outside, nothing says Sixties, like the stone fence, the cement & brick path, the double light posts out front.

Also the almost flat roof, the beamed front porch. This house is also constructed of cinder block and then stuccoed.  While common in a lot of places it's a rarity in Oregon.

The garage started out as a carport, that somebody enclosed.
Close up of Front porch Structure

This house even came with a great little picnic table that someone built - probably from a pattern out of an old mechanics illustrated magazine.

The front of the house is one large room. Kitchen, dining and living.  With open beamed tongue & groove beamed ceilings, and of course nice 1960's paneling (which I think is Birch).

A close up shot of the fireplace and windows at the end of the room.

a real hearth as well
There's this great divider, separating the living room from the kitchen. On the living room side it's a book case on the other side it's the range.

ahh yes, seen as a "woddity in Turquoise" on Retro Renovation - here's one in copper tan-cocoa brown. It's a "woddity" due to it's 2 tiered burner set up.

The great part is the sink matches, and so does the Westinghouse Refirgerator.
With the freezer in the refrigerator, this bad boy frosts up something terrible, but it's just sooo cool!

Notice that the door holds 2 dozen eggs

There are some great retro lights in the main room as well. This one is over the kitchen sink.
On the wall next to the front door.

Over the Dining room table.

I love the kitchen cabinets, and they are in great shape. ( I think they are Birch too)

Oh, and here's a photo close up of the Formica - which is perfect.

And the whole house is sporting the same carpet, the owners are a tad freaked out (understandably) about it in the bathroom.
Speaking of the Bathroom it's a time capsule too:

Love the Light

The shower makes you realize that it was a different world in 1965.  I'm 5'6 and I fit in the shower.  But if you're 6 foot and an average weight you are not going to be comfortable in this shower.  One of our guests said it made the shower in his RV seem spacious :-)

Bathroom fan is even original - The cadet wall heater was original, but shorted out in a blaze of glory a year ago!
The back door off the driveway, enters into a Laundry/Pantry/Storage room.

A few interesting details from the bedrooms: Wonderful sixties bedroom curtains

An an early american lamp and night stand that came with the house.
More early american.

The overhead light fixture

More 1960's Curtains

This overhead light - I LOVE!

All the sliding closet doors, seem to be solid wood and heavy - with those cool little recessed openers

 Another piece of early american
The hall way has a really interesting wall texture

Well I think this is a fantastic place - I hope you enjoyed the tour.  If anyone wants to stay in this historical gem you can find it on our website.
